Glory to Lord Ganesha, the abode of all virtues and the wisest among poets. You are the remover of obstacles, the bringer of auspiciousness, and the beloved son of Goddess Parvati (Girija).

The Glory and Appearance of Ganesha

Verses 1-2: Victory, victory, victory to Lord Ganesha, the ruler of all divine attendants (Ganas). You fill our lives with peace and ensure that all auspicious tasks are completed successfully. Glory to the elephant-faced Lord, the bestower of happiness, the leader of the universe, and the creator of intellect.

Verses 3-4: You possess a beautiful, curved trunk and a pure, holy body. The crescent-shaped Tripundra tilak on your forehead looks captivating. A beautiful necklace of pearls and gems adorns your chest; you wear a golden crown upon your head, and your eyes are large and magnificent.

Verses 5-6: In your hands, you hold a book, an axe, and a trident, while you are offered sweet Modaks and fragrant flowers. Your body is draped in beautiful yellow silk garments (Peetambar), and the tiny shoes on your holy feet captivate the minds of even the wisest sages.

Verses 7-8: Blessed are you, the son of Lord Shiva and the brother of the six-headed Kartikeya (Shadaanan). You are the beloved child of Mother Gauri and are renowned throughout the world. Prosperity (Riddhi) and Spiritual Power (Siddhi) serve you faithfully, and your vehicle, the mouse, looks splendid at your doorstep.

The Story of Ganesha’s Birth

Verses 9-11: Let me narrate the auspicious story of your divine birth, which is holy, pure, and filled with blessings. Once upon a time, Mother Parvati (the daughter of the King of Mountains) performed rigorous penance to be blessed with a son.

Verses 12-14: When her grand ritual (Yagya) was successfully completed, you appeared before her disguised as a holy Brahmin. Treating you as an honored guest, Mother Gauri happily served you in various ways. Highly pleased by her devotion and her strict penance, you granted her a boon.

Verses 15-17: You promised her: “You will be blessed with a son of immense intelligence, born instantly without going through a physical pregnancy.” Having said this, you vanished and instantly took the form of a newborn infant resting in a cradle.

Verses 18-20: As a baby, when you started crying, Mother Gauri’s joy knew no bounds upon looking at your divine face. Everyone felt ecstatic and began singing festive songs, while gods from the heavens showered flowers. Lord Shiva (Shambhu) and Mother Parvati distributed immense wealth in charity, and sages came from all over to witness the beautiful child.

Verses 21-23: Seeing the grand celebration, Lord Shani (Saturn) also arrived to see you. However, knowing his own destructive gaze (evil eye), Shani hesitated and did not wish to look directly at the child. Mother Parvati misunderstood this hesitation and felt insulted, asking why Shani was not participating in her joy.

Verses 24-26: Shani hesitantly explained, “What good will come from me looking at the child?” But Mother Parvati, unconvinced and fearless, insisted that he look at her baby. As soon as Shani’s diagonal gaze fell upon the infant, the child’s head detached and flew straight into the sky.

Verses 27-28: Mother Parvati collapsed to the ground in overwhelming grief, a sorrow so profound it cannot be described in words. Chaos and lamentation shook Mount Kailash because of the tragedy Shani’s gaze had caused.

Verses 29-30: Lord Vishnu immediately mounted his vehicle, Garuda, and flew off. Using his divine Sudarshana Chakra, he brought back the head of an elephant. Lord Shiva then placed the elephant head onto the child’s torso and revived him by chanting powerful mantras.

The Test of Wisdom and the First Worship

Verses 31-33: Lord Shiva then named the child ‘Ganesha’ and blessed him to be the first deity worshipped in any ritual, naming him the ocean of wisdom. To test his sons’ intelligence, Lord Shiva later asked Ganesha and Kartikeya to circle the entire Earth.

Verses 34-36: Kartikeya immediately flew off on his peacock, losing himself in the vast journey. You, Ganesha, sat down and used your supreme intellect. You simply circled your parents seven times, treating their feet as the entire universe.

Verses 37-38: Seeing this, Lord Shiva’s heart filled with joy, and the gods showered flowers from the heavens. Even the thousand-headed serpent Sheshnag cannot fully sing praises of your immense wisdom and glory.

Prayer for Devotion and Conclusion

Verses 39-41: I am ignorant, troubled, and distressed; I do not know how to pray to you or seek your shelter. This prayer is composed by the humble servant Ramsundar, residing in the holy lands of Prayag, Kakra, and Durvasa. O Lord, please show mercy to this poor soul and grant me a fraction of your devotion and strength.

Verse 42: Whoever recites this Ganesh Chalisa with full concentration and meditates upon Him, will find new happiness and prosperity residing in their home every day and will earn great respect across the world.
